Dr. Christopher Johnson Treats Hondurans on Annual Medical Mission for 16th Year

Christopher D. Johnson, MD, FACS, hand, knee, upper extremity and sports medicine specialist at Professional Orthopaedic Associates, recently returned from his annual medical mission trip to Honduras in August. Along with other medical volunteers from the Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) organization, Dr. Johnson provided medical care to Honduran patients with bone, joint and muscle injuries and conditions. 

As the local program director of and a longtime volunteer in the HVO organization, Dr. Johnson coordinates and participates in volunteer care for the HVO’s mission program in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, at Escuela Hospital. This August marked Dr. Johnson’s 16th consecutive year of completing medical missions in Honduras.

HVO is a nonprofit organization with the mission to improve healthcare globally through education. The HVO hand surgery mission in Tegucigalpa is one of three hand surgery missions through the organization. HVO also currently runs missions for every medical specialty in resource-scarce countries throughout the world.

In addition to volunteering his knowledge and skill in treating patients, Dr. Johnson also provided continuing education to the physicians at San Felipe Hospital on his most recent trip, sharing methods and techniques in the latest, evidence-based orthopaedic care.

“It is a privilege to be able to contribute to the continuing education of these physicians,” says Dr. Johnson. “It is an honor to treat these Honduran patients, who have such significant injuries with such few possibilities to obtain appropriate care.”
