Walk Your Arthritis Pain Away
Osteoarthritis of the knee, often referred to as wear-and-tear arthritis, is a condition in which the cartilage within your knee wears away.
“When your cartilage begins to wear away, the bones of your knees rub more closely against one another,” says Dr. Brian M. Torpey, joint replacement surgeon at Professional Orthopaedic Associates. “Without the shock-absorbing benefits of cartilage, you may experience pain, swelling, stiffness, and decreased mobility.”
However, Dr. Torpey says that a diagnosis of osteoarthritis does not mean you’re destined for immobility. A recent study shows that patients who walk each day are able to avoid the development of functional problems, such as having difficulty getting out of a chair or walking up and down stairs. In the study, researchers found that the more people walked, the better their knees were able to function.
